Maybe a weird question but what do you think of reading books you're pretty sure you'd dislike to inspire yourself to write, as opposed to reading authors you admire. Like, I know I'd feel much more encouraged to write after reading dreck like Twilight or FSoG than I would reading my favorite author, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Because when I read FSF I feel like I can't compare, but the first two, I just get so irked that drivel like that can be published that I know I can do better. |

Once a friend of mine actually loaned me a book which was horrifically awful- I didn’t understand why she’d loaned it to me, until she told me that it was to encourage me as a writer, because I was already better than that. I read critically to improve my writing- good books to see what to do right, and bad books to see what to avoid. If you practice taking notes in your head like this, it’ll help a lot.
