So one of my characters is a violent sociopath, which I'm aware is a bad thing. But would you say it's a character trait/flaw that prevents her from being a believable protagonist?

Not a bit.
I once read a book called Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.
It’s a first person story about a pedophile and his molestation of a thirteen year old girl.
For the people who can’t get past his spin of the events, he’s a totally sympathetic protagonist. I’m not even kidding, google. It’s like half the readers. I felt for him, up until his relationship with Lolita began.
With hard work and/or genius, you can make your readers feel any way you want, for any character you want.

Language is scary as fuck.
